I draw on my daily interaction with the environment to inform my painting practice. I paint in an attempt to render the intangible forces of nature and to bring order to my understanding of the interconnectedness and dynamism of natural phenomena. Just as there are endless forms in nature, there are endless possibilities in the studio. It is at this juncture that my interest in the natural sciences and my painting practice converge. The paintings and drawing trace layers of experience in shape, line and color to give structure to organic patterns and rhythms. I choose mediums and substrates on their inherent qualities to serve in the development of the work—often exploring multiple mediums to find the one that gives form to my thoughts.

The Lo Studio dei Nipoti residency will expand my painting practice as I explore the landscape and come to know first hand the culture and traditions of this region. The past and present will intertwine in the layering of my new Calabrian experiences with vestiges of my familial history.
