The time is right
The current tension in Calabria brings an opening, and correspondingly there is pressure from the artists to create this residency: During a one month published “call for artists,” over 50 highly-qualified, credentialed, southern-Italian-American artists applied for the opportunity to spend three months doing their work in Calabria. Their proposals are heartfelt. Many are educators as well as artists, and many offered their help in various ways in order to make it happen. Their work is a labor of love.
It’s well understood that several artists working in close proximity are of greater value to the community than those same artists working as islands; similarly the cultural perspective brought by native Italian artists is vital and necessary to the success of the residency. Their presence is the final puzzle piece to “showing love within the requirements of things being visible.”
